Essential Information About Patch Testing

A patch test is carried out to check for any allergic reactions or sensitivities to the products used during a treatment, ensuring the treatment is safe for you. Where a manufacturer of a product recommends that a patch test should be carried out it is essential that one is done. Treatments will not be carried out without a patch test, this is for your safety and to ensure that I comply with my liability insurance obligations.

Timing

Patch tests are carried out a minimum of 24-48 hours prior to a treatment. This allows enough time for any reaction to occur.

For other beauty treatments that you receive regularly a patch test is only required if you have not had one for over 5 months or there has been a change to your health/medical status. If in doubt please get in touch.

Tints

A small amount of the tinting products will be applied with a cotton bud behind your ear and left to develop for a few minutes. There may be a mild sensation, but it should not cause discomfort or irritation.

Some degree of staining will occur behind the ear but will fade with washing.

Eyelash Lifts and Eyebrow Laminations

Using a cotton bud a small amount of perming solution and fixing lotion is applied to the crook of your arm. This will be left on for a few minutes and then the excess is wiped away. There may be a mild sensation, but it should not cause discomfort or irritation.

Waxing and Relaxation Treatments

Patch testing is not required for wax treatments unless specifically requested by the client.

What Does a Reaction Look Like?

If any positive reaction should occur it will appear as redness, a rash, swelling and/or itching.

What Should I Do If I have a Reaction?

If irritation occurs you should wash the area immediately and apply a soothing cream such as calamine lotion.

If more serious symptoms occur please consult a pharmacist or your GP. Please also advise myself.

What is my Responsibility?

It is your responsibility to ensure you undertake a patch test when required and to inform me of any known allergies or previous reactions. It is also your responsibility to tell me if you have had a reaction to the patch test.

Consent

Prior to your patch test you will be asked to sign that you have read and understood the patch test information and that you consent to having a patch test.

Risks and Liability

In receiving a treatment that requires a patch test you accept there may be a risk of an adverse reaction to the treatment. You also acknowledge that an adverse reaction can happen at any time and not necessarily after the initial treatment. You also accept that patch testing on the skin is not an absolute indicator of whether a reaction will occur or not. Patch testing mitigates the risks but does not eliminate them. As such if you do experience a reaction you will not hold your lash technician responsible in any way.
